I was playing full ring exclusively. alot of what I think, or thought, about that game is in the limit holdem section here in PR. basically I started out crushing it then settled in to even. and lately Ive had some rough sessions. all in all, about even, which is much better than I used to do at higher stakes like 2,4 and 3,6 I just wanted to educate myself and feel I did that. a lot of the "profit" from all this grinding was the FPP i generated on stars. Aside from the technical aspects of that game a few other observations.

1. limit has variance, big variance. many times I would be up twenty BB on one table and down just as much on another, same guy, same day, same style, two wildly different results.

2. forget about playing poker tired. if you are well rested you have a massive advantage.

3. take a deep breath and dont tilt cause these games will tilt you. with the stakes as they are you have some really strange and bad play going on, dont be suprised if you feel like calling someone a simpleton every five minutes, chill out and expect the shennanigans or dont play at these stakes.

maybe someday, ill move to higher stakes online. but for now Ive only recently started fighting the donkeys to a draw in say .5,1 and 1,2 limit games online. so im not sure i have the skills to go higher when I cant even beat the lower stakes. I come out even at the lower stakes, not a consistant winner. when you consider the rake i think that means im doing good but not great there. what im saying is im board with those games, so Im going to try some tournements where I could win big. five ten games are just around the corner in colorado, so i willl have no prob gtting in a live game that size since my live roll is about 4k, and those games are much softer than same stakes online.

my online roll is more like 7 hundred between two sites., so most likely shouldnt go higher at this time. i have been in a fair amoutn of five ten and 8.16 limit games online and i think i do ok, es. in HORSE and stud hi low, but the issue is with only say four hundred you could easily lose most of yoru roll on a few bad hands, which is bound to happen, i.e. i dont have the online roll to stomach the variance at those levels. maybe someday ill get say 4k online and really try those games but for now its more than i want to spend or risk online unless i can somehow win it in a tournement.

also when it comes to online games, by the time i get done with work im exhausted, whereas if im in a live game its usually on a day off from work. thanks for the thoughts joey.

if you still think I should move higher online I would entertain the idea but would want some sound reason to do so. I may need to write more clearly if you took my blog to mean I am beating the low stakes online games, not so yet. , . tnx.

Default Blog Mind Dump 6/14/09

First, you gotta be tough, and not just a little tough, you have to be very, very tough mentally. This game will wear you down. You will lose alot, even if you play well. You will lose to bad players, sometimes consistantly. If it wasnt that way, then marginal players would never play with good players. You must find a constructive way to deal with bad beats. For me, I make an honest assessment of my play in a losing cash session or a tournement, if I can honestly say I played well, then I try not to worry about the donkeys. Thats all you can do. Deep breath and move on, any other action will hurt your game.

Second, you should gamble within your bankroll at all times. There are two reasons this is so. 1. you must be agressive to win, and if your worried about the amounts involved you wont make the correct decisions. 2. the edge you have is not that great in any one gambling session. If you risk your entire BR on one session or tournement, for ex. with 2% edge, you are gambling more than you are playing poker, and you will continually go broke. Over many trials, exploiting that edge, you will grow your BR and not go broke.

Third. You should excercise patience in game selection. The internet in particular makes it easy to jump in and play, without studying the game first. If you do that sort of thing, you are making a huge mistake. I can not tell you how many times I have been stuck in a .5,1 stud hi low game, only to look around and find a 5,1o game that is much, much softer. Do your game selection homework and be flexible, or dont play.

Four. You have to adjust to the game at hand. Styles and hand selection are a good starting point, but what separates average players from great ones is the ability to adjust.

Anyways, just wanted to write these things out, because they are things I know, but dont always execute well.

With respect to my games lately, there is not much to say except that I continue to feel that I am playing very well. I have the feeling lately, that my opponents will have to get lucky to beat me in a hand. I hope that doesnt come off as arrogant, its just that I have worked hard lately and I think I have a good feel for the games I am in, lets call it confidence. I am doing well in tournements but no big scores. I do think however, that its just a matter of time. GL, Never surrender.
