- Always be the guy saying "yes." They need you to change shifts? Sure. Can you cover the Stud8 event again today even though it's suicidally boring? No problem. Hey, one of our bloggers is out today, can you step in and enter the hands into the system even though you've never done it before? I'll do my best.
- Always, always, always be on time.
- Writing rules. All of the people I know that are in poker media can write well. I got my first internship with Huff because of my writing sample. I would never hire someone who couldn't write well. Writing rules.
Few other things:
- When the postings start going up looking for interns for next year, I'm sure someone will post it in one of the forums here. If you're looking for a good recommendation, and you've been someone that's contributed to the forums, let me know.
- Take whatever they give you. When I was first offered the Circuit internship, I accepted not knowing if I was going to get paid, where I was going to live, how I was going to afford it, etc. And the thing is, even if I found out it was unpaid and I'd have to provide housing and all that, I still would have taken it.
A couple of the guys from PokerNews the last few years started off as chip count grunts. The next year, some were writing weekly columns for them or managing the updating team. My CardPlayer days would LITERALLY start off with me walking 1/4 mile to Starbucks to get Huff his Septouple Espresso and Belsky his Non-fat Chai Tea Latte.
Point? Take a job sweeping the floor if it gets you in the Rio during WSOP time.
If anyone has specific questions for me about the poker media biz, post them here and I'll try to be of any help I can.

I'm a 37-year old police officer with 3 kids, a wife, bulldog, etc. etc. and this thread is driving me bananas. Where was this life when I was 21 ? I've been extremely envious of Court, Shronk, and the gang for sometime. I can write like a Pulitzer-prize winner (see http://www.willing2dieblog.com) and can recognize just about every poker player in the world both live and online. Now........if I can just figure out a way to leave my 6-figure salary and wife and kids for around 6 weeks, my wildest dreams just might come true .
Justin....it was worth a try.

What you've got to do is satty into the main event and then go early.

If your goal is to NOT get a job in poker media, then yes, this is optimal strategy.

If you make 6 figures...don't enter the poker industry.

Definitely something I would be interested in when I hit 21.
Anything around poker would be a dream job for me. In 3 years time Shronk will be getting a call from me. Whether I get a reference or not is debatable because of the Gay thread in PRR Forums.

I'll chalk that humor attempt up to a fail.

Funnily enough, my pokerroad internship this summer came about quite quickly and unexpectedly. But one thing shronk told me was that "if you can write, you can do anything". So I think that that would be an appropriate area to focus ones resume on. More over, it seemed like it was more my cover letter explaining my personality that created interest then the information on my resume.
The posting for last years WSOP internship with pokerroad came up at the end of april so keep your eyes open this year!!
