Thanks again to everyone who participated in our survey research about the use of cognitive and performance enhancing medications (CPEMs) in poker players. As stated in the initial post, I am providing some summary results of the findings recently presented at the College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists Annual Meeting.

198 poker players representing over 20 countries finished the survey per the Opinio protocol. 28% of players reported taking a prescription medication (e.g., amphetamine, methylphenidate), 26% a dietary supplement (e.g., guarana), and 80% an ‘other substance’ (e.g., caffeine, marijuana, alcohol) to improve their performance in poker. Players reported taking CPEMs most frequently to improve their focus. They self-identified as amateur (37%), semi-professional (35%), professional (25%), and recreational (3%). No-limit hold ‘em was the most commonly identified form of poker played by respondents. Positive predictors of CPEM use for poker included previous use of medications for non-poker reasons (e.g., studying for an exam).

Results from this research will be used to drive future studies and educational initiatives. Expanded results from a subsequent presentation can be viewed at: http://bit.ly/a51KHD
