Default best year of movies

what do you consider the best year of movies ever, in trying to wiki random kung fu movies trying to figure out the next " name the movie" post i came across a list of movies in 1999, and i was shocked that there were so many good movies that year, so what do you consider the best year for films?

After doing some quick research (read: procrastinating at work) can I suggest 1984, it had (in no particular order): Ghostbusters, Terminator, Beverly Hills Cop, Karate Kid, Gremlins, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Red Dawn and Police Academy.

Funny, I had this conversation out at the ballyard a few weeks ago. I submitted 1976.

The Oscar for Best Picture went to Rocky, which had to beat out Network, Taxi Driver, All The President's Men and Bound For Glory. I can't think of a year that had a stronger slate of nominees than that one (and I also disagree with the actual winner).

I would also give a high honorable mention for 1973. The top four grossing films also rank as four icons in their respective genres: The Exorcist, The Sting, American Graffiti and Enter The Dragon. I struggle to find another year in which art and commerce coincided to this degree.

I'd take 1996

1996 in film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fargo is my alltime favorite movie
Lone Star in my top 10 (tremendous Chris Cooper performance)

more I really liked from 96

Big Night
Bottle Rocket (Wes Andersons first film)
Brassed Off
Flirting with Disaster
Hard Eight (PT Anderson first film)
Kingpin
Mother
Palookaville
Secrets & Lies
Shine
Sling Blade
Swingers
That Thing You Do!
Trainspotting
Trees Lounge
Waiting for Guffman
Welcome to the Dollhouse

Also a couple guilty pleasures in Rumble in the Bronx and Happy Gilmore, and a couple good performances in movies I didn't like by Ed Norton in Primal Fear and Chris Cooper (again) in A Time to Kill.

Sadly a movie I disliked in the English Patient grabbed the Oscar

deep year

Wasn't English Patient translated in China to the equivalent of The Sick Englishman
