I remember a college professor preaching to our class about finding work after we graduate. The most frequent practice, of course, is to look for job openings then apply/interview/hope. He disagreed with this, arguing that our best course of action is to find a place for which we want to work, determine how we can add value, then offer our services and/or expertise to achieve that goal. (This was part of a lesson on the word "proactive," which had become something of a business buzzword at the time.)
With her apparent qualifications, Postert had quite a bit to offer someone. However, she likely lacked the initiative to create an opportunity for herself. On the other hand, Kaufman had the gumption to know how to put her skills to work and the willingness to take a risk (albeit an informed and calculated one). Then he created an opportunity. When some of these protesters wonder why they're on the bottom of the 99 percent and why people like Kaufman are among the 1 percent, perhaps that's a big part of the reason.
