I compiled those numbers before the 2008 WSOP, but didn't plan on referencing them on the show, so I went from memory. Thanks, Lon!
My point is that Hellmuth has come close to quite a few non-hold'em bracelets, somewhat dispelling the myth that he's nothing but a hold'em player.
I think it was this last stop at Bellagio where a young player challenged Hellmuth by saying that Andrew Lichtenberger was the greatest tournament poker player in the world. Hellmuth said something like, "Excuse me, but don't my 11 bracelets count for something?"
The other player said something like, "Yeah, but like seven of those bracelets came in the pre-Moneymaker days when fields were small and nobody knew how to play."
Hellmuth said something lame, missing a perfect opportunity. My WPT boss and I immediately expected him to say, "Okay, so that leaves me with
four bracelets in the Moneymaker era. How many do you have?"
It's a pretty obvious comeback (my boss and I came up with it separately), and the kid set him up perfectly. As fun as it is to watch Hellmuth antagonize people, how much more fun would it be if Hellmuth had a quick wit?
