Concerning branding
I'm going to have to disagree with the notion that Harrah's is not way behind in making their brand known to the general public. Tilt and Stars both advertise very effectively outside of poker broadcasts. You'll see their commercial buys in prime time slots on ESPN non-poker programming such as Mike and Mike, First Take, Around the Horn, Pardon the Interruption, and Sports Center.
As far as poker broadcasts go, Stars seems to have adopted a big splash then let it die approach. They made a big post NFL splash on Fox with their improved version of Tilt's game show format, and then let it fade away. Stars did the same with the shoot-out from Mohegan Sun, which was essentially one and done. Who knows what will happen with NAPT or The Big Game. Stars approach seems to be make a splash, make an impression, spread the brand, dont bother to keep it going. Add to that the close Stars sponsorship of High Stakes Poker and Heartland Poker Tour (BTW, I wouldn't be surprised if the continued success of the HPT was part of the inspiration for the revamping of the WSOP circuit events).
Compare the Stars and Tilt heavy advertising in and out of poker broadcasts with the Harrah's CEO occasionally appearing in a commercial sharing his concern for problem gamblers. The spot doesn't even mention poker. Seriously, who are the expert marketers? This is not to say that Harrah's and other land based casinos can't catch up, but at this point they appear to be well behind.
