I have some forums that I frequently visit. One day, a very well respected member of the community sadly passed away in a car accident. Although the big majority of the members didn't know him in person, it was a very big shock.
Spontaneously, someone made an avatar, used in remembrance of this person. It was a beautiful white dove, on a dark black background. Within minutes, a great number of people gave up their own avatar and used this avatar as a tribute to the deceased person.
It was a great sign of a close community, almost felt like family. Whole threads with solely white doves, it was quite something. Being a hardcore fan of PRR, listend to all possible episodes from the early days on, lurking in the forums, posting occasionally, the same feeling came over me as that day a few years ago. Obviously, I didn't know him in person, but still the shock was big.
I'm changing my avatar into the dove again. It would be a great thing if there are people who wants to follow. Of course, it's all up to anyone individually. Everyone has their own way of dealing with such a loss. So don't feel obligated or anything. But I can guarantee - the story above and how we all experienced it, brought the community together. Call it corny or whatever you want, it just did.
Anyone who's with me, here you go:
