Default Note about the shadow forum

Whenever a new thread is initiated in the Red Pro forum, we will make a copy of it in this forum. This will not only provide a convenient place for our entire community to join in and discuss these hands, but by keeping all of the hands in one separate forum it will make it easier for red pros to stop by and contribute to the discussions.

Thank you! Must be a psychic thing, I was just thinking today, I wonder how I can suggest a shadow forum?

And here it is!

Default A question about the Red Pro Forums

Quote:
In return for giving up specific information that can probably used against them, we hope this forum helps our red pros become more marketable. We will encourage our red pros to have links to their pet projects in their "signatures," whereas that would be considered illegal spamming in other forum communities.

Barry
As a relatively young tadpole in the poker world, I've found these forums better than any book as it's all real world examples and with more than one viewpoint. Most books preach one particular style but these forums often throw up answers that are poles apart. It gets you thinking about which approach has more merit and which suits your own style.

But...in the back of my mind, I have to wonder. How much free information should a pro give up about themselves? Should they trickle just enough to show some involvement? Are the seasoned pros now getting a good line on the many Internet pros that post? Is the reason we never see Phil Ivey post because he's looking at the 'bigger picture' and wants to give away as little as possible? Is there a possibility of mixing in misinformation sometimes to keep people guessing?

Like any kind of information, after you absorve it you can make your judgment if they are good or bad tips(and when i say "bad", is like a view you disagree).

The play is in the execution, and most people can't do it, especially in real time. Although I realize I help people when I talk about poker, I sometimes shy away from details that will only help people play against me. There is nothing I have read in these forums that is likely to affect the way I play, except against certain individuals since I may possibly have a better idea how they think, in cases I didn't know much about them.

Secondly, particular plays may or may not fit into your system of play. For example, a line where someone suggests slow playing and check calling may work for a certain player, but a loose aggressive player will often do better just betting his good hands. Some of our contributors will benefit by exchanging ideas of what lines are possible, but they are all going to have to figure out at the table what they will actually do against a particular opponent.

Also, most of what we say is helping players who aren't near our own level yet. And in some cases, (although none of us are that devious) a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. When some highly-touted play books came out the last few years, it made tournaments easier for me because it made players more predictable. But it also made those same players better than they were against weaker opponents.

Even though you may decide that some of the information is invalid or just not well-suited to your game or to the opponents you play against, if you think people are intentionally throwing out misinformation, you aren't paying attention. In the end, the red pros are giving up something here, and people should appreciate that.

BG, I don't think anyone is throwing out misinformation. It was more a question of "does it go against the grain for a poker player to publicly give out information about their play while also helping others (possible competitors) fix their leaks". Do the old school pros not post because they don't much use the interwebs or because it's not in their nature to prop up their competition?

They don't post because they aren't always technically savvy, they wouldn't enjoy it, and they don't want to go back and keep up with it.

I had to badger Phil and Gus ten times before they posted. Phil said, "You're not going to try to turn me into a poker nerd, are you?" They both needed help logging in, and it took Gus ten minutes to hunt and peck his entry.

David Benyamine needed Erica to log in and do the typing and, as I suspected, the "fo sho" was her contribution to the post.
