National Heads-Up Poker Championship Wrap-up; Huck Seed Takes It Down
March 9, 2022

Say what you will about the fast structure and single elimination format of the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship, but there's no denying this highly anticipated event seems to produce a top flight winner every single year; a trend which only strengthened this weekend with the crowning of Huck Seed as the new 2009 champ.

In the five years this event has been held, three of the winners have now been World Series of Poker Main Event Champions (Phil Hellmuth, Chris Ferguson and now Huck Seed), one was a WSOP Main Event runner-up (Paul Wasicka), and the other was Ted Forrest - who may not have gotten that deep in the big dance yet, but has won nearly a half dozen other bracelets in everything from Razz to Hold 'em to Stud.

To Join this prestigious club, Seed had to defeat six opponents over the weekend which included Jonathan Little, Gus Hansen, Glen Chorny, David Oppenheim, Sam Farha and finally Vanessa Rousso - the runner-up of the event and arguably the player who busted the most brackets during her impressive run.

It's no knock on PokerStars Pro/ Go Daddy Girl Rousso to say her deep run was somewhat unexpected, it's more of a comment on the incredibly tough road she had to follow to reach that final table, a route that went through Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, Paul Wasicka, Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier before finally ending with Seed. As things lined up, Rousso would have needed to outmatch six players with more than 20 WSOP bracelets between them to earn the NHPC title and unfortunately for her (and for all the fans hoping for the first NHPC female champion) despite a valiant effort, she was unable to get past the final roadblock that was Seed.

The final money finish positions for the 2009 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship were as follows:

Fifth Place - $75,000
David Williams (Hearts Bracket)
David Oppenheim (Diamonds Bracket)
Daniel Negreanu (Clubs Bracket)
Phil Hellmuth (Spades Bracket)

Third Place - $125,000
Bertrand Grospellier (Spades Bracket)
Sam Farha (Hearts Bracket)

Second Place - $250,000
Vanessa Rousso (Clubs Bracket)

First Place - $500,000
Huck Seed (Diamonds Bracket)
