A Special Night At The WSOP; Las Vegas, NV

Some days just really remind you of how beautiful life can be.  You know those days I mean, right?  When everything just falls into place and things align just the way they should, and the puzzle pieces just all fall together nicely.  Tonight was one of those nights at the World Series of Poker.

Brian Lemke took down his first WSOP bracelet last night after battling back several times in a grueling heads up match.  He had plenty of competition at this final table.  David Pham, Mike Sowers, Thomas Keller, and Isaac Baron were just a few of the names that he had to best to be able to claim the hardware at the end of the night, but he did best them.  He proved himself to be an outstanding poker player, but I know him as an outstanding person.

Brian is Shronk's cousin.  He flew out to Vegas after Shronk's heartbreaking passing and helped to get everything in order from the family side of things.  He chatted with us.  He sat in on our tribute radio show.  We shared hugs and stories, and he helped me get through that tough time.  When we flew back to Philly to pay our respects he was one of the friendly faces that I knew there and I was eased just seeing him there.  I can't thank him enough for helping me get through all of that and tonight was very special for me, as I know it was for him. I had headed over to the Rio to rail him, and hopefully bring a bracelet into our little family once again.  He was amped up and we, again, shared several hugs and looks in remembrance of what we helped each other through just a few short months ago.  We had chatted the day before about how he was deep in the $5k event and I told him just to keep doing what he was doing.  It was obviously working, so I didn't want to say anything that could screw with his mojo.  He did just that and found himself at that final table today.  Wow.

He battled and battled and when he finally won that final hand, coming from behind to take the bracelet, he came over and gave me a huge hug and said, "You know why I won this, don't you?  You know."  The answer was emblazoned on his shirt, "Got Shronk?"  I just told him that yeah, I did know.  It was a really beautiful moment and I absolutely teared up a little from it.  Sometimes things do fall the way they should.  Sometimes the good guys do come out on top.  They are victorious and things seem just perfect with the world.  Tonight was one of those nights and I couldn't help but soak it in as Brian posed for all his pictures with his new bracelet.  I just couldn't be prouder of him.

While it makes me sad that Shronk isn't with us to enjoy all the WSOP fun that is going on this year, I could almost hear his voice ("Seebs, seriously.  I don't think you understand.  That's my cousin up there.  My family.  He just won a bracelet.  I can't believe it.  Why don't YOU have a bracelet when my own cousin has one.  You kinda suck.") both soaking in the moment, as well as finding the sarcastic wit in it as well.  Tonight reminded me how much he loved online poker and he excited he got about it.  Tonight I felt the same way.  Tonight I was a fan of Brian, and I couldn't have been happier.
