HPT's New Champ Embodies The Name
March 30, 2022

The Heartland Poker Tour crowned a new champion over the weekend at The Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel, in Tama, Iowa (pop. 2,587), and as if that wasn't "Heartland" enough, the winner of the event was John Kurfman, a hard working Illinois farmer only able to compete in the event because of the weather.

"I'm glad it was raining this weekend, so I could come up and play," stated Kurfman, adding that when he is not farming with his father he's playing poker.

The 23 year-old Kurfman beat out 296 other players to take down the $83,916 first prize of the tournament, nearly 75 times the initial $1,100 buy-in.

The Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel "Top 6" of the Heartland Poker Tour were as follows:

1st.  John Kurfman - $83,916

2nd.  Tim Peters - $41,958

3rd.  Ronald Utley - $25,175
