WASSUP '09: Wahlbeck Wallops Chiu
June 8, 2021

Event #12 of the 40th Annual World Series of Poker, the $10,000 buy-in Mixed Event Championship, had one of the most impressive final tables thus far assembled.  Besides holding past WSOP main event champion Huck Seed, the final eight also held Todd Brunson, Mark Gregorich, James Van Alstyne and four-time WSOP bracelet winner David Chiu.

Although much of the smart money was on Chiu to take down the event once the final table had begun- given his impressive past WSOP resume, it became increasing more difficult to ignore the one Finnish player at the table, Ville Wahlbeck, who not only entered the final table as the chip leader but was also just coming off a solid 3rd place cash in Event #6 the World Championship Seven Card Stud tournament.  Indeed, by the time the final table smoke had settled, it wasn't Brunson or Seed that stopped Chiu from earning his fifth WSOP bracelet, it was the lesser known Wahlbeck, the one player out of the 194 that entered that Chiu just couldn't seem to  push through.

For the victory Wahlbeck earned $492,375, his first WSOP gold bracelet (also the first one for his homeland of Finland) and the thrill of seeing his name listed as one of the leaders on the prestigious World Series of Poker Player of the Year leader board.  For runner-up Chiu earned $304,176.

The final table finish positions for Event #12 were as follows:

1st.  Ville Wahlbeck- $492,375

2nd.  David Chiu- $304,176

3rd.  Scott Dorin- $199,940

4th.  Mark Gregorich- $139,159

5th.  Huck Seed- $102,286

6th.  James Van Alstyne- $79,181

7th.  Mike Wattel- $64,373

8th.  Todd Brunson- $54,854
