WASSUP '09: Cantu Crushes The Pot-Limit Omaha 8
June 29, 2021

Just last week in Event #39, Brandon Cantu came torturously close to scoring his second career World Series of Poker bracelet, just to be denied at the last moment by Ray Foley.  Instead of allowing that disappointment to fester, Cantu jumped right back on the horse this week and won Event #48.

Cantu defeated a total field of 762 players in the $1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Omaha Eight-or-Better Event, including a final two tables that held Lee Watkinson and 11-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth.  Hellmuth was unfortunately unable to even make the final table busting in 14th place, but Watkinson made it all the way into heads-up play and almost denied Cantu for a second time, trading the chip lead with him numerous times.

For the first place finish Cantu earned $228,867, his second WSOP bracelet and another 100 WSOP Player of the Year points (placing him solidly in the top ten).

The final table finish results for Event #48- the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Split 8-or-Better were as follows:

1st.  Brandon Cantu- $228,867

2nd.  Lee Watkinson- $141,873

3rd.  Mathieu Jacqmin- $92,946

4th.  Ted Weinstock- $64,727

5th.  Tommy Vedes- $47,617

6th.  Steve Jelinek- $36,893

7th.  Aaron Sias- $30,028

8th.  Ronnie Hofman- $25,618

9th.  William McMahan- $22,862
