The Main Event: Legends Often Fall
July 8, 2021

The first Day 2 of the World Series of Poker Main Event saw carnage in the Rio, as hundreds of the initial 1,478 Day 2a players, had their dreams of winning Poker's ultimate prize cruelly dashed.

More than half of the day's starting field was eliminated by the end of Tuesday's play including many, many, well known professional players.  In fact, to say it was a tough day for the marquee names would be a gross understatement, I haven't seen prose abused so badly since Keanu Reeves was in Shakespear's Much Ado about Nothing.  Just a short list of players knocked out during the difficult day includes Gus Hansen, Johnny Chan, Jon "PearlJammer" Turner, Jennifer Tilly, Brian Townsend, Phil Laak, John Hennigan, Tony G, Raymond Davis, Jason Mercier, Shaun Deeb, Lex Veldhuis, Hoyt Corkins, Mel Judah, Alex Kravchenko, Todd Brunson, Billy "The Croc" Argyros, Mike Matusow, Gavin "the Caveman" Smith, Kili Madrid, Brad Garrett, Amarillo Slim Preston, Dewey Tomko, Juha Helppi and sadly "Poppa PokerRoad" Barry Greenstein.

With so many pros felted during Day 2a it would be easy to imagine there aren't many recognizable names left to see Day 3, but happily that's not the case, just some of the folks that could be seen happily filing out of the Rio at the end of the day were Greg "FBT" Mueller, Eric Cloutier, Andy Black, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, Sorel Mizzi, Shane Warne, Mike Sexton, Jimmy Fricke, Tom Schneider, Pam Brunson, Vitaly Lunkin, Kara Scott, Greg Raymer, Isaac Baron, Erik Seidel, Joe Serock, Roland de Wolfe, Will "The Thrill" Failla and Joe Sebok, still carrying the banner for Team PokerRoad with an above average chip stack around 122,000.
