Cimpan Cinches Second WPT Title
November 11, 2021

For those not familiar with the name Cornel Andrew Cimpan, it may be time to take notice.  Clearly not a poker one hit wonder, the 2009 World Poker Tour LA Poker Classic winner, yesterday claimed his second WPT title of the last 12 months, beating out 353 players over six days and adding another $910,058, to his live poker bankroll.

To earn this second title, Cornel was forced to decimate a very tough final table, one that even cynical online players would have to admit was pretty challenging.  Some of the known pros to make the final six included Lee Markholt, Matt "Allinat420" Stout and Eric Froehlich.

Despite starting the day as the chip leader, along with the difficult competition Cimpan also had to contend with losing his chip advantage numerous times throughout the course of the day and even entered heads-up play as a more than 3-1 dog, thanks in part to his final opponent, Soheil Shamseddin, taking most of Matt Stout's chips during three-handed play, by rivering a full house to overpower Stout's heart flush.

The highly likable Shamseddin nearly closed the door on Cimpan a few times during heads-up play to earn his first WPT title, but instead eventually had to settle for the second place cash, after calling Cimpan's huge all-in move with a King-Jack that was sadly dominated by Cornel's Jack-Ace.

For the runner-up finish Soheil earned $463,332, clearly crushing his previous best $263,725 third place score, which he acquired earlier this year at the WPT Southern Poker Championship.

The final table finish positions for the World Poker Tour Foxwoods World Poker Finals were as follows:

1st.  Cornel Andrew Cimpan - $910,058

2nd.  Soheil Shamseddin- $463,332

3rd.  Matt Stout- $265,710

4th.  Eric Froehlich- $232,496

5th.  Curt Kohlberg- $199,283

6th.  Lee Markholt- $166,06
