There Will Be No "Hold 'Em For Hunger" This Year
March 24, 2022
The University of North Carolina's "Hold 'Em For Hunger" charity poker tournament has been canceled. The $25 buy-in annual event traditionally brought in thousands of dollars for Nourish International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to seeking "innovative and effective ways to make a tangible reduction in poverty around the world." The event was canceled after a few concerned individuals contacted the University, believing the event could be seen as illegal. The University decided to have their lawyers examine the matter, who then determined the event did indeed violate some North Carolina laws. The university expressed remorse, but felt they had little choice but to abide by state laws in place.

"Hold Em For Hunger" saw 510 people attend last year's event, and were anticipating to double that number for 2008.
