Tax Dollars At Work: $25 Poker Game Busted
January 15, 2022
After months of undercover investigations, the San Mateo County Sheriffs Office finally raided a weekly low stakes poker game that was surely a menace to us all. Organizers, Culberto Cardenas a.k.a. "Bert," and Patricia McCoy were each arrested and charged with misdemeanors after the Saturday afternoon raid.

The game in question was typically a $25.00 to $50.00 poker tournament with an additional $5.00 refreshment fee, apparently meant to pay for beer, pizza, etc. The tournaments had about 20 to 30 regular players, made up mostly of 30 to 40 year olds. The game was organized through Meetup.com, a popular website which facilitates in finding different types of groups and clubs for like minded individuals. According to officials in this case the site was used to lure "unwitting" participants to illegal poker tournaments.
