WASSUP '08: The Negreanu Open Begins

Event #5, the $1,000 No-Limit Hold'em w/Rebuys, has begun at the 2008 World Series Of Poker. This event is always one of the most highly anticipated preliminary events of the Series, with many big name players like Daniel Negreanu, willing to dust off tons of rebuys in order to build up the table and hopefully themselves in the process. Day 1 of this $1,000 buy-in event did not disappoint, it attracted 766 entrants, who together rebought 2,258 times. This created a prize pool of $2,894,094 with a top prize of $636,736.

The rebuy event at the series is beloved by the pros and many, including quite a few from PokerRoad decided to play in it. Familiar faces around the Amazon Room included, Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, Mike "The Mouth" Matusow, Lee Watkinson, Jeff Lisandro, Gavin Smith, Layne "Back to Back" Flack, Vanessa Rousso, John "The Razor" Phan, T.J Cloutier, Allen Cunningham, "The Bear" Barry Greenstein, and of course "Kid Poker" himself Daniel Negreanu.

By the end of Day 1, only 106 players remained with Phil Ivey leading the way with 175,500 in chips. Other notable survivors included John Juanda, Alex Jacob, Daniel Negreanu, Alan Sass, Amit Makhija, Lee Watkinson, Phil Hellmuth, Chad Brown, Michael Binger, Clonie Gowen, Nenad Medic and PokerRoad blogger Jeff Madsen.
