WASSUP '08: Main Event Day 1A : The Power of the Patch
July 4, 2021
The first day of Main Event of the 39th Annual World Series Of Poker began with an old school Vegas feel, as Mr. Wayne Newton himself got the cards in the air with that old standby, "shuffle up and deal!" To many, the day probably felt like that Vegas of old - cruel, tough, and at times, sweaty.

Many big name players decided to start on Day1a and despite the deep stack nature of the event, many ended up on the rail, including Tom "durrr" Dwan, Josh Arieh, David Benyamine, James Mackey, Eric Froehlich, J.J. Liu, Dan Harrington, Erica Schoenberg, and David "Devilfish" Ulliott.

The day seemed especially cruel to the PokerRoad family as we lost Gavin Smith, Kevin Saul, Steve Sung and despite a promising start, Joe Sebok. Of course, with over 1,200 starting players for Day 1a, some big names had to survive to Day 2. Some of the "names" included Kido Pham, Mark Vos, Bob Slezak, Michael Craig, Nick Schulman, Perry Friedman, Scotty Nguyen, Thomas Wahlroos, Joe Beevers, Jimmy Fricke and Ray "Everybody Loves Me" Romano. Ending the day second in chips was Brandon Adams (coming off his AM PokerRoad Radio appearance and sporting a PokerRoad patch, hint hint!) Still carrying the flag for PokerRoad are Paul Wasicka, Anna Wroblewski, and of course "The Bear" Barry Greenstein (all wearing PR patches).

In total, 636 players survived Day1a where they will now patiently wait for the Day1b, 1c and 1d survivors to join them. Day 1b begins today at 12:00 PM PDT.
